OnDemand App

Suite of Mobile and Desktop Product Apps

The suite of On Demand mobile and desktop applications enable broadcast talk stations and podcasters to easily and seamlessly produce, manage and stream contents to their stations.

The Challenge

Create a new product line that will target talk stations and podcasters. The process of producing, managing and broadcasting content for these type of stations consisted of complicated setup, purchasing and learning how to operate different combinations of software and equipment, editing content and uploading content to the hosting site.

The task called for developing a suite of mobile and desktop apps that would make this process easy for professional and non-professional broadcasters.

The Process

The process started by collecting user feedback from a small number of broadcasters and podcasters. The user feedback were done through quick phone calls and online questionnaires. During the need-finding interviews, I showed low fidelity mockups and wireframes of talk application concepts. My goal was to find out which of the features I’ve created would make their work easier and would eliminate a lot of the bottlenecks in their content-creation process.

After I’ve evaluating all user feedback, I’ve developed another round of designs that addresses the feedback. Then, I developed user flows, storyboards and wireframes . Usability test with a small group of listeners was conducted using paper prototypes. At the end of the process, we had a clear picture of what the users want and what we can deliver to meet their needs.

Through user interviews, internal discussions and evaluation of current technology architecture, my design group and the engineers decided to develop three main products: Mobile On Demand Broadcast Tool App, Desktop Admin App and Mobile On Demand Listening App. The Mobile On Demand Broadcast Tool App enabled the user (contributor) to quickly record audio, edit and enhance audio and easily upload audio to their audio cloud locker.  Through the Desktop Admin App, the admin user could approve or reject the audio. If the audio is approved, the audio will instantaneously appear and made available for listeners to listen to through the Mobile On Demand Listening App.

App Flow

My  role was to create all the wireframes, workflows, sitemaps, interactive prototypes, low &  high fidelity mockups and designs for the Mobile Broadcast App, Desktop Admin App, and Mobile On Demand App. I presented these design concepts to all the team for sign off. After a few iterations and collaborations with project managers, engineers and designers, my concept designs were approved and the development work began.

The Solution

We wanted to release these applications to the market as quickly as possible to get an initial assessment from users as to the usefulness of our apps. We opted to developing and releasing a minimum viable product version of the app.

We saw a demand in the Education market for these suite of apps which is why we released our first suite of apps target to this market. The product suite was called “LiumeiTalk”.

LiumeiTalk Online Curriculum targets mostly foreign High School students. As part of their curriculum in class, students will be taught how to produce talk shows. Students will learn how to interview fellow students, teachers or create personal audio blog, edit the audio and submit the audio to their teacher. The teacher will then reject or approve the audio. If approved, the episode will be posted on the school’s mobile listening app.

Mobile OnDemand App Video & Prototype

This was a sample of my initial design concept of the app. It showed the Explore screen where users discover trending, recently played, recommended, and personalized genre stations.

News/Talk Listening App

For field reporters, the mobile broadcast app was perfect for quickly recording, editing and submitting audio content directly from the field to the station admin. The desktop admin app could also be configured to bypass the approval process. By doing so, breaking news content would be automatically uploaded and available for listeners to listen to in a push of a button.

This was a sample design concept i’ve created showing the mobile listening app. It was demoed to some radio/talk stations as part of our need-finding effort on exploring News & Talk radio stations vertical market.

Mobile On Demand Broadcast Tool App

This was the minimum viable product app I worked on. It was released at the end of 2015 for the Education vertical market. The app turned users mobile devices in to an ultimate professional broadcasting studio. Students and faculty contributors can record and edit through the mobile app from anywhere around the world.
