Live365 Website

Website Redesign

At Live365.com website, listeners can listen to over thousands of human powered radio stations created by people from around the world. Live365 also provides each broadcaster with the platform and tools they need to create their own radio stations.

The Challenge

The current website, at that time, was built on archaic architecture that doesn’t enable users to listen to the stations via mobile web. The player was placed inside the body of the page which made it difficult to make the website responsive. A number of users and broadcasters had commented that the design of the website looked outdated.

The Process

The website redesign process started by prioritizing all the features we wanted to implement. The most requested feature was making the stations accessible via mobile web. To tackle that issue we rebuilt the website on a new platform. By developing the website on the new platform, we were able to address and fix the problem with playing our broadcast stations on mobile devices, as well as other issues that made it impossible for the current website to be responsive.

My challenge was to recreate a website that is responsive, scalable and looks current. I made sure to design “mobile first” then work my design to fit a tablet and desktop screen. I’ve initially created wireframes of the site and presented them to the executive team, managers and developers. Since we wanted this project to be done quickly, I’ve created high fidelity mockups to get a feedback for both workflow and design ideas at the same time. I did a usability test for internal personnel as well as selected broadcasters and listeners to get some feedback on the flow and look and feel of the site. After a few iterations, I sent the final designs to the developers.

The Solution

After analyzing results from usability tests, the new layout and design was submitted to the engineering team for development. The player was moved from the body of the page onto the bottom bar. An improved search cloud also enabled users to discover stations not only by genre but also by theme, mood and activity. I’ve implemented some of the concepts of Material Design making the pages look bright, bold, clean and current.
