New Product Desktop Apps

Studio365 Basic & Live are two desktop applications that enable broadcasters to manage their stations programming from their own computer. Using Studio365 Basic, broadcasters can upload and store prerecorded content and create playlist. With Studio365 Live, broadcasters can add live broadcasting capability to their station, talk live on air and receive live Skkype call-ins.

The Challenge

For Studio365 Basic, the task calls for a redesign of the current desktop application. The workflow for uploading tracks and creating playlists were not very intuitive and often leaves broadcasters to calling support for help. Broadcasters also asked for other features such as options to upload tracks in batch or one at a time, automatic conversions for music formats to mp3, easily update track metadata and display useful statistics at a glance.

For Studio365 Live, we’ve determined through research that our target users would be non-professional broadcasters. Finding that balance of simple and intuitive user experience and still providing powerful features that high-end broadcast applications provide was definitely challenging.

The Process

The process started by collecting feedback from a small number of broadcasters. After identifying the needs of our broadcasters, the product manager and engineers provided the project deliverables, spec requirements and broke down each features into small user stories.

As as UX designer, I’ve explored other applications our professional broadcasters uses. I took a good look of these applications features and reviewed the process of how professional broadcasters produce their show on a daily basis. Through numerous interviews, research findings and competitive analysis, I’ve proposed features and user flows that I think would help our users have a much better experience doing their work on our application. I’ve developed the workflows, wireframes, mockups, visual interactions and prototypes. When all wireframes and mockups were approved, I delivered all image assets to the engineering team.

The Solution

Upon release of the application, broadcasters raved about the two new products. Not only have the application met what the broadcasters have asked for, the intuitiveness and easy of use of the application enabled them to create contents for their stations quickly and easily.
